Old Town Edinburgh

Edinburgh Old Town originally the streets from Edinburgh Castle to St Mary's Wynd (Castle Hill Lawnmarket and High Street

ending at the Nether Bow Port (Gate) .

On both sides of the streets were the castle rock and a hill. On the Southside was a Loch drained prior to 1300's now where the Cowgate and Grassmarket now stand. On the North side was open land until the base of the area below the Castle was flooded to make the Nor' Loch which was done as part of the defences protecting invaders from the North. The first wall to protect Edinburgh Castle and the houses was the King's Wall built 1426 -1460. This wall and its gates were moved and reenforced in 1513 -1560 after the Battle of Flodden field when the Kings army was destroyed and the king was killed in battle.,
